Baltic Sea coast & countryside

Hohwacht Bay and the region around Lake Selent offer not only the Baltic Sea coastline typical of Schleswig-Holstein, inland the countryside is dominated by the foothills of Holstein Switzerland.

It is still to be found from Blekendorf Bay to Hohenfelde: the romantic Baltic Sea atmosphere which holiday-makers always rhapsodise over. But also the leisurely pace of life which is the mark of the Schleswig-Holsteiner people and the quiet romantic bays surrounded by reed grasses, right beside the sea. Many of our beaches have kept something very pristine. The countryside is a masterpiece with softly undulating hills and fields of rape in full bloom in May.

The beach at Sehlendorf is particularly beautiful, for example, with its undeveloped coastline. Reed grasses and flowering hedgerows are to be found here. Behrensdorf beach with its nature and bird sanctuary is an invitation to go walking and bird-watching.

At the foot of the second-largest "mountain" in Schleswig-Holstein, Pilsberg (128 m), lies dense woodland. Numerous plants and animals have their habitat in this picturesque area criss-crossed by marshy hollows and steep slopes.

The nature sanctuary at the north end of Lake Selent covers a quarter of the lake.  This part is home to many, in some cases very rare animal and plant species.

The Baltic Sea is also very beautiful near Hubertsberg (Hohenfelde) with its cliffs and natural beaches. It lies embedded in the charming East Holstein countryside marked by hedgerows and lakes and the "Push moraines of Hessenstein" nature sanctuary.
